Reverse Garage Sale 2006

This year we learned how important it is to advertise! Nonetheless, the Human Service & Roterac Club conducted a wonderful event by providing families and children with used goods such as clothing, toiletries, toys, and even a scrunchy! Everything was provided for free. The first picture shows HSC members dealing with throngs of patrons from the community as we opened the doors.

Some of the toys that were made available.
A suspicious customer found a nice sweater.

Some of our volunteers, from left to right; Kelly, Erica, Karen (back), Kallie (with a K), Sarah, and Jen (peeking out). The question is…where in the world is Jada?

Vista Problems: Grades Next Week

It has come to my attention that my rosters in both sections of Interpersonal Relations and the family and Child Development are not updated. That means that I do not have a place to post your grades on WebCT-Vista. I do have the grades and will discuss them with you next week. I will update the rosters today (Friday) but the servers are updated each morning at 8am, or some such thing, so you will not be able to get your grades online until Monday or Tuesday…at the earliest.

My apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. I will update the Vista grade book as soon as I can.

Defense Mechanisms

Building Family Strengths students - You can find a rough web page of the Defense Mechanism presentation here. It does not translate well to the web but it is what it is. Also, FireFox will not view this page. I do not know about Netscape but IE 4+ is able to load the page just fine. Huff.

Let the Learning Begin!

Welcome to the fall 2006 semester at Kent State, Salem. It’s going to be an exciting semester for HST and HDFS. There have been numerous changes but all for the better. We have some fantastic instructors lined up to teach our classes and a new Interim Academic Program Director, Karen Filkins-Sanders (7-4260 or 330.337.4260). Ms. Filkins-Sanders is available to answer advising questions and deal with other departmental business. Personally, I look forward to our classes and getting to know everyone.

Dr. West to Work with NorTech

From Carol A. Cartwright,President:

On July 1, Dr. West will begin a one-year leave to work with NorTech, directing an exciting effort to make our region the center of the global effort to manufacture flexible electronic devices. This effort builds on Kent State's established world leadership in liquid crystal and related technologies and on the region's core industrial strengths in polymers, printing and engineering.

The future market for consumer and industrial electronics is in the production of devices from cell phones to large, flat-screen TVs on flexible displays. Northeast Ohio can seize the lead in the global race, based in no small part on Kent State's leadership in the field and the start-up companies already here making use of Kent State research, centered in our Liquid Crystal Institute. Also crucial to this effort are the important collaborations with other institutions, industries and organizations such as NorTech.

NorTech's technology and business leaders are strategic drivers of the region's technology-based economic development agenda and work to align and leverage regional technology assets to build a more globally competitive technology economy. NorTech promotes research, innovation, entrepreneurship and technology industry growth throughout the region for the benefit of all citizens. [Read More]
